©1990-2014 Summer Aspen Painting by Jill Saur,  all rights reserved
My 18"x36" summer acrylic aspen tree painting, "Resounding Joy", was a painting commissioned by some of my favorite clients.  After purchasing their first painting from my gallery, they decided they wanted another piece for a special place in their home.  They wanted summer aspens and we came up with this idea.  Soon after, they commissioned a larger painting for a summer home they were building in the mountains.  How fortunate I've been to have such wonderful and appreciative clients!

Commission A Painting by Jill Saur

I love Van Gogh.  People often associate Van Gogh with his tumultuous life and don't realize he was a master artist, draftsman, and color theory expert.  Although he painted quickly, he applied his artistic knowledge with every inspired brushstroke.  My artwork is deeply inspired by Van Gogh.

I've titled my painting above, "Joyful Encounter." I painted this textured palette knife painting using brilliant azure blues, effusive reds, and warm golds.  Although I rendered it in a spontaneous fashion, I applied my knowledge of color theory and the elements and principles and design.

"Joyful Encounter" and many other paintings of mine are available to purchase on my new and easy to navigate, e-commerce website.  If you're looking for a particular sized painting, why not consider commissioning me to paint an original just for you?  I love to paint commissions. Thanks, Jill Saur

I'VE GOT THE BLUES

My 36"x36" acrylic palette knife painting is loaded with beautiful blue hues.  There isn't one brushstroke on it!  All the paint was applied with three different palette knives.  It was time consuming, but the result was well worth it.  It positively glows with brilliant hues.

This, and many other works of art can be found on my new website.  Purchasing is secure and easy.  And, I now offer free shipping in the Continental U.S.!  www.JillSaurFineArt.com

Van Gogh's Thoughts

Van Gogh Sunflowers

Several hours before my visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City last year, I read a letter that Vincent wrote to his brother, Theo (below). How ironic that Vincent considered himself a nonentity in the eyes of most people. Fast-forward to today and people flock to the museums to see his work.
“What am I in the eyes of most people — a nonentity, an eccentric, or an unpleasant person — somebody who has no position in society and will never have; in short, the lowest of the low. All right, then — even if that were absolutely true, then I should one day like to show by my work what such an eccentric, such a nobody, has in his heart. That is my ambition, based less on resentment than on love in spite of everything, based more on a feeling of serenity than on passion. Though I am often in the depths of misery, there is still calmness, pure harmony and music inside me. I see paintings or drawings in the poorest cottages, in the dirtiest corners. And my mind is driven towards these things with an irresistible momentum.” - Vincent Van Gogh
While visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I stood transfixed as I gazed at Van Gogh's work.  In 1887, three years before his death, Vincent completed this sunflower painting (see my photo above). I became lost in the texture, the colors, and the feeling of this transcendent piece.
I love Van Gogh.  I love that despite his misery, he was able to tap into the pure harmony and the music within his soul.  Undoubtedly, he felt his very best when he was able to express himself with brush and paint.  I can relate to that.
The best wines come from grapevines that are grown in the poorest and rockiest soils. When the grapevine struggles, its roots grow deeper, where they ultimately find natures best nutrients. I think Van Gogh's miseries, touched with his genius and spiritual inclinations, created the profound beauty we see in his paintings today.  - Jill Saur

“A tree against the sky possesses the same interest, the same character, the same expression as the figure of a human. – George Rouault”. (French painter)

It's no secret that I love to paint trees!  George Rouault's quote deeply resonates with me.

I rendered my 38”x48” acrylic aspen tree painting with brush and palette knife.  I closed my eyes and wandered through one of my trips to Colorado, where the azure blue sky against the dancing white aspen trees ignite endless waves of inspiration.  The title of this painting is, “Resilient Beauty”.  It hangs in the home of one of my patrons.

Reasons To Buy A Jill Saur Original Painting

Reasons to Buy a Jill Saur Original Painting
The number one reason to buy an original painting from me is because of how much you love it, and how it makes you feel!  I have a solid record of selling to collectors for the past twenty-nine years.  Many of my patrons return to purchase another piece to add to their collection.  One of my ardent clients owns eleven of my original paintings.  She's been collecting my work for the past ten years.  Even though I offer a 100% money-back-guarantee on all of my originals, I've never had a client return a painting.
A great painting sparks the right hemisphere of our brains, stimulating ideas, and ideas are the root of creativity. If you surround yourself with art that inspires you, your life will be greatly enriched!
Studies in work environments have shown that the productivity of an employee is elevated by as much as 25% when they are exposed to original art in their everyday jobs. Art that makes you feel good can uplift your mood and give you a greater sense of well-being. When a corporate office is enhanced with original art, the environment is elevated to a dynamic level that will incentivize both employees and clients!
My patrons tell me that my art inspires them, uplifts their mood, and gives them a sense of peace.  Whether in a home or corporate office, I'm honored that my paintings are hung in a prominent place for all to enjoy.
When you buy an original painting from me, you'll have a one-of-a-kind creation that no one else in the world has.  Your painting will become a family heirloom and be able to be passed down to subsequent generations.
My paintings have aesthetic value.  Because my work is vibrant, uplifting and full of life, the majority of my clients purchase my paintings to be the focal point of their homes. You'll be happy to know that I take meticulous care of my clients, but you'll never forget how my paintings make you feel.  My Website:  CLICK HERE
I'll end with  a comment from one of my patrons:  “Jill, Your works have found a place in our home and in our hearts. “Whispering Path” hangs over our fireplace and on the opposite wall, “Autumn Gold”. No matter what entry you make to our family room, you are drawn down one birch lined life path or another. The contrasts are attractive and walking down either path, in one’s mind, lends a sense of satisfaction and peacefulness . You and your work have contributed so positively to our surroundings and that “glad to be home” feeling. Your paintings, by far, are the best purchases we have ever made for our home.  Thank you. We are proud to be patrons of Jill Saur. With warmest regards, Greg and Deborah” - Dunwoody, GA

Martin Glaser Quote

©2016  Jill Saur, all rights reserved

Martin Glaser, a legendary New York graphic designer, famous for creating the ‘I Love New York’ logo, recently spoke about something that’s dear to my heart.  Martin said, “If you can sustain your interest in what you’re doing, you’re an extremely fortunate person.  What you see very frequently in people’s professional lives, and perhaps in their emotional life as well, is that they lose interest in the third act.  You sort of get tired, and indifferent, and sometimes, defensive and you kind of lose your capacity for astonishment, and that’s a great loss, because the world is a very astonishing place.”

Most of my clients lead very busy lives, are professional businessmen and women, own businesses and some are taking care of large families.  I also stay very busy with my classes, painting, and the business side of what I do.  It takes determination to stop and re-charge the creative side, but it's vitally important.

I’m in the third act of my life and  I still find wonder in observing nature, seeing the cloud formations before a storm, and getting up early to watch the sunrise over the misty waters of the Chattahoochee River.

I agree with Martin Glaser, the world is a very astonishing place and I hope you're able to take the necessary time to be utterly astonished too! - Jill Saur

My 8"10".5" oil palette knife and brush painting, "Relinquished", has richly textured trees, revealing their "bone structure" against the value tones of winter. African Poison Dart Frog By Jill Saur

©1990-2016 Frog Painting by Jill Saur, all rights reserved
The African poison dart frog is mesmerizing,  and beautiful.  In its native habitat, one frog carries enough poison to kill up to thirty or more people!  I saw an exhibit of these frogs at The Atlanta Botanical Gardens, where I took photos to use as subject matter to paint.  Interestingly, these frogs don't produce poison on their own.  They become poisonous after eating mites and ants that have dined on poisonous plants.  Take away the frogs toxic food source, and you take away the poison.  These little creatures are only two inches long!

This 12"x9" acrylic painting, "Little Blue Frog" is sold, but it is available in a hand-embellished limited edition giclee.  It makes a beautiful reproduction!  To email me  CLICK HERE

Van Gogh's Use of Complimentary Colors

Van Gogh Vase Flowers
Van Gogh Vase With Flowers Painting
Van Gogh"s Use Of Complimentary Colors by Jill Saur

Title:  "Vase With Daisies And Anemones"
Painted In Paris In The Summer Of 1887

This oil on canvas by Van Gogh is rendered with stunning complementary colors (colors that are opposites on the color wheel).  In this case, the opposites are blue and orange, purple and yellow, and red and green.  In color theory, this combination of colors is known as a six tone chord (hexagon).

Van Gogh was a master of color, drawing, and composition.  He knew how to use just the right amount of a colors compliment to enhance the original hue.

I've always been intrigued by color and have experimented with it, but it wasn't until about fifteen years ago, that the secrets of those hues began opening up to me.  I spent many long hours and months studying and making color charts and complex color wheels.  Learning the difference between warm blues and cool blues, warm reds and cool reds, warm yellows and cool yellows, made all the difference in the world!

I teach my students how to make their own color wheel.  I love to see when the light goes on and they understand what it's all about.  Realizing how to mix color without having it turn to mud, knowing how to tone down a color without using black, and knowing how to choose the right colors for a painting, is a game changer!  - Jill Saur - Jill Saur Fine Art

Van Gogh's Trees

Vincent Van Gogh Pollard Birches
Vincent Van Gogh Trees "Pollard Birches" 1884

"I can think of no other European painter whose work expresses such a stripped respect for everyday things without elevating them." - John Berger on Vincent Van Gogh

It's no secret that Vincent Van Gogh is number one on my list of favorite artists.  He was passionate, disciplined, incredibly smart, innovative, and someone who loved deeply.  Can you just get lost in his trees?  I can.  In the above drawing, the trees take center stage, but it's not long before you notice the image of people working in the fields.  I love this piece.  Please enjoy another quote below by John Berger.  He writes of Van Gogh's act of drawing in beautifully descriptive terms.

"What do we see? Thyme, other shrubs, limestone rocks, olive trees on a hillside, in the distance a plain, in the sky birds. He dips the pen into brown ink, watches, and marks the paper. The gestures come from his hand, his wrist, arm, shoulder, perhaps even the muscles in his neck, yet the strokes he makes on the paper are following currents of energy which are not physically his and which only become visible when he draws them. Currents of energy? The energy of a tree’s growth, of a plant’s search for light, of a branch’s need for accommodation with its neighboring branches, of the roots of thistles and shrubs, of the weight of rocks lodged on a slope, of the sunlight, of the attraction of the shade for whatever is alive and suffers from the heat, of the mistral from the north which has fashioned the rock strata. My list is arbitrary; what is not arbitrary is the pattern his strokes make on the paper. The pattern is like a fingerprint. Whose?" - John Berger on Vincent Van Gogh

This past summer I had the opportunity to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art on three different days.  I spent quite a bit of time at the Van Gogh exhibit.  I was mesmerized by his brushstrokes and use of color.  If you have any opportunity to visit any museum that houses works by Van Gogh, please don't miss the opportunity! - Jill Saur   www.JillSaurFineArt.com

My new 10"x10" acrylic aspen tree palette knife painting, "Blue Essence" is available to purchase by contacting me.  CLICK HERE   To view more of my paintings, please visit my website.  I have three aspen art galleries filled with aspen tree paintings on my website.  CLICK HERE

Atlanta is a big city and people here don't realize there are thousands of acres along the Chattahoochee River that have been preserved as part of the National Park Service.  When you get out in these areas, you realize you could be anywhere! The scenery is breathtaking, there are no sounds of cars, the air is fresh, and it's quiet!

My 48"x36" acrylic painting of Sope Creek, is titled, "Autumn Promise".  I'm thankful to live in such a beautiful area where I can get lost in nature and have my artistic senses refreshed.

Buy Original Art Atlanta

A great painting sparks the right hemisphere of our brains, stimulating ideas, and ideas are the root of creativity.  If you surround yourself with art that inspires you, your life will be greatly enriched!
Studies in work environments have shown that the productivity of an employee is elevated by as much as 25% when they are exposed to original art in their everyday jobs. This doesn’t surprise me.  Art that makes us feel good can uplift our moods and give us a greater sense of well-being.  Whether in a home or business, I'm honored that my paintings are hung in a prominent place for all to enjoy.
