Vincent Van Gogh 1853-1890 |
Vincent Van Gogh By Jill Saur
Born on March 30th, 1853, Van Gogh created over 2,000 works of art on canvas and paper. He only sold one painting in his entire life and yet he is one of the most recognized artists of all time!
He is a man that, against all odds, produced an incredible legacy in a short period of time. Van Gogh didn't start painting until he was in his early twenties and he died when he was only thirty-seven! His brother, Theo, was so grief stricken at the loss Vincent that his own health declined and he died a year later.
No artist has had the single most effect on my later years as an artist as Vincent Van Gogh has. His knowledge and use of color was so profoundly understated that I don't think the majority of the general public realize what a true genius he was. His use of complimentary colors and their tints and tones still amaze me to this day.
Van Gogh broke out of the mold of the traditional painters. His free flowing lines, bold brushstrokes and vibrant colors, delight viewers to this day. Happy Birthday, Vincent!
