"You Make Me Smile", is the title of my new 12"x9" acrylic aspen tree painting.  This painting has movement, it exudes joy, and of course there's always a story in my renderings.  Here, the forest exudes inexplicable happiness as the two trees in the foreground watch and participate in the dance of life.

Summer Aspen Tree Painting by Jill Saur

“A tree against the sky possesses the same interest, the same character, the same expression as the figure of a human. – George Rouault”. (French painter)

"Aspen Dance" is one of my new oil paintings (8"x8").  I rendered this piece using a palette knife.  I closed my eyes and mused about one of my trips to Colorado, where the blue azure sky against the dancing white aspen trees ignite a flame of inspiration.

This piece is for sale.  Email me: CLICK HERE.

Subject Matter To Paint by Jill Saur

copyright for artists
©2010 Sunflower by Jill Saur, all rights reserved

I've wanted to paint sunflowers for a long time now.  I either paint from live set-ups in my studio, my imagination, or subject matter that I've captured in my photography.  Yesterday, I devoted the entire day, right up until I taught my evening class, to capturing sunflowers.  I photographed all morning in a field, and then I spent the afternoon photographing a special setup that I created in my studio.

Outdoors, some of the sunflowers seemed to have personalities all their own.  There were the flamboyant ones, the shy ones, the ones that gazed down to the earth, and those special ones that gazed up to the heavens.  Indoors, I photographed against a black drop cloth and used a vase that complimented the sunny yellow flowers.  Yesterday, I worked a twelve-hour day.

I've written this to explain the long arduous process that many artists go through to get their subject matter to paint.  It's all too common these days to see paintings, by established artists, being copied and signed by other artists, then sold as originals.  Some people have the misconception that if they just change one or two things from the original, then it's their own.  Legally, if a judge can determine that the latter painting was derived from the original, it is a copyright violation, subject to heavy fines.

There's nothing more rewarding than knowing that your art is the result of your insight, creativity, and hard work.  Copy the Old Masters to learn, take your own photos, and if you see a photo you want to paint, get permission from the photographer.  Otherwise, don't use it.
Also, check out copyright free websites where you can use photos that people have donated for subject matter to paint.  A good one is Wet Canvas.  (www.wetcanvas.com)

Happy Painting! - Jill Saur  www.JillSaurFineArt.com

Aspens in the fall are a site to behold.  This painting was inspired by a trip to Colorado with my wonderful sister.  Aspen trees are amongst the oldest living organisms on the planet and they can grow a new tree from their root ball.  I love the symbolism they carry and the beauty they hold for those walk amongst them.

This painting, "Autumn Green", is an original acrylic on canvas and measures 11"x14".  It has texture in the trees and foliage and has a lovely warm glow when the lights are dimmed.

Trees on Canvas by Jill Saur

Dramatic, emotionally engaging, and filled with metaphor, this 20"x16" acrylic painting is titled, "Paso Doble".  It reflects the dance of life.  Sometimes the dance is soft and melodic, while at other times the dance is so dramatic, it requires the fortitude and strength of a matador.

Tree Art

Tree Art by Jill Saur
"If you reveal your secrets to the wind, you should not blame the wind for revealing them to the trees."
- Khalil Gibran

My 8"10".5" oil palette knife and brush painting, "Relinquished", is richly textured on the trees, revealing their "bone structure" against the value tones of winter. The title suggests that place in life where we relinquish ourselves and open up our hearts and minds to fresh inspiration and new possibilities.

I love aspens in winter. Their beautiful white trunks and dark branches mingle with the dark shadows cast upon the white snow, creating a profound beauty that is best experienced in silence.

Pear Still Life Painting

“Love Jo all your days, if you choose, but don't let it spoil you, for it's wicked to throw away so many good gifts because you can't have the one you want.” - Louisa May Alcott, Little Women

This 36"x48" over-sized painting, "Love Triangle", hangs in the home of a patron who had their eye on it for over a year before they purchased it. I've also reproduced this in a hand-embellished limited edition giclee on canvas, for clients who need a focal point for their room and who love the story this painting tells.

This painting is about unrequited love. The two pears on the left represent two people in a relationship, ignoring the third suitor on the right, who eventually has to turn away. Unrequited love is painful. But what we want, is not always what we need or what's best for us.

Estes Park, Bear Lake Painting by Jill Saur

Estes Park, Colorado, is one of America's treasured National Parks that I hope to return to someday.  If you ever get a chance to visit, be sure you spend a day up at Bear Lake!  We came away with some incredible photos for me to use for subject matter to paint.  This 11"x14" acrylic painting, "Autumn Inspiration" is inspired by one of my walks up at Bear Lake. The aspens were just beginning to change.  The brilliant hues of the quaking leaves, against the azure sky, captured my spirit.

Seascape by Jill Saur

This 16"x20" acrylic seascape painting on canvas is titled, "Renewed Solace". It was inspired by my memories of growing up near the ocean and heading down to the beach to watch the sunrise. I found renewed energy in the steady flow of the ocean waves breaking on the shore, the fresh sea air, and seeing the rays of the sun shine through, illuminating what had once been dark clouds.

Floral Still Life by Jill Saur

My 48"x48" painting, "Joyful Encounter" is featured in this months magazine,"Art Galleries and Artist's of the South", by Matilda's Art Gallery in Historic Roswell, Ga. I also had an unexpected surprise when I saw it on television this weekend on HGTV's, "Green Home Giveaway". They were filming the galleries in Historic Roswell and artworks represented by those galleries.

This painting emerged out of my imagination, which is both exciting and challenging at the same time. It might be hard to see in the photo, but the entire painting was executed with a palette knife and it's loaded with texture.

This painting is for sale at Matilda's Art Gallery in Roswell, but you can contact me through my website and I'll put you in touch with them. Thanks for viewing!  www.JillSaurFineArt.com

Trees In Art - Palette Knife Painting

"Everywhere across whatever sorrows of which our life is woven, some radiant joy will gaily flash past". - Nikolai Gogol

My tag line is "joy on canvas". It was given to me by Stan Lee, the creator of Spiderman, The Incredible Hulk, and many other super heroes. Years ago, when I was forming my business, I needed three short words for a tag line to describe my art. I asked Stan for help because he is the most creative person I've ever known and he's the ultimate wordsmith. He has several of my paintings in his home and knows me and my work. When he came back with "joy on canvas", I knew it was quintessential for me.

Life is not perfect, sorrows befall all of us. How desperately we need joy in our lives to have hope and keep us afloat. This 12"x12" palette knife painting on canvas, "Joy", epitomizes the feelings I express when I paint.  This painting is available to purchase by contacting me through my website.  CLICK HERE

Andrew Wyeth

Andrew Wyeth, american artist
Andrew Wyeth Painting
Andrew Wyeth – American Master Artist  (1917-2009)

He was the quintessential example of a true American artistic genius. He was Andrew Wyeth, my favorite American Artist.

When Andrew Wyeth died in 2009, he left behind a body of work that depicts a simpler, yet somewhat complicated time in American History.  He wove together his love for the African American community over the hill from his home, and the farming community just outside his doorstep.

Andrew’s disciplined artistic journey began as a young boy and his respect for the human spirit never wavered.

He is the only artist I’ve ever known who was given unequivocal license to enter the homes of those he knew.  At any time of the day or night, he would enter with canvas, brushes and paint, to render some of his most haunting work of his subjects while they were sleeping, cooking, or just sitting and looking out the window.

Several years ago, in Atlanta, GA., The High Museum hosted an Andrew Wyeth exhibit that contained an extraordinarily large body of his work.  Just viewing one of Andrew Wyeth’s emotionally charged paintings was such a powerful experience that seeing such a large body of his work in one place was almost overwhelming.

Andrew Wyeth once said, I search for the realness, the real feeling of a subject, all the texture around it, I always want to see the third dimension of something.  I want to come alive with the object.”

Andrew’s desire was to capture a moment, not a frozen moment, but a fleeting moment.

This is why I believe it's important, when painting from a photograph, to know the difference between a frozen moment and a fleeting moment and why if you're the one who took the photo, you'll have much more success rendering the feeling of what you're painting!

Crucifixion of Jesus Painting

Painting the crucifixion of Jesus  was an emotional endeavor for me.  Every stroke, every hue, pierced my heart and caused deep reflection.  This painting, "Golgotha", remains in my collection.  A reproduction is available by contacting me through my website . www.JillSaurFineArt.com

From the prophetic book of Isaiah written around 700 years before the birth of Christ: "He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief, and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed." Isaiah 53:3-5

Trees In Art

My original aspen tree painting, "Abundant Memories", is a 36"x48" acrylic painting on a wide border canvas, with the sides painted, eliminating the need for a frame.

When I work on these large canvases, I first execute a warm under painting to give the entire canvas a glow that will translate through to the finished piece. In the daytime, my work is bold, vibrant and full of life. In the evening, it emanates a warm glow, creating an ambient focal point for the room.

Lionfish

Creatures that are both breathtakingly beautiful and deadly at the same time intrigue me. The lionfish, with its long flamboyant pectoral fins and dazzling red-orange and white striped body, is one of those creatures. Second to the stingray, its sting is one of the most venomous fish in the ocean.

Although I've seen these fish in the wild, there’s a stunning exhibit of them in the Gatlinburg Aquarium, one of my favorite aquariums in the United States!

This 40"x30" oil painting on a wide border canvas, "Lion In Blue", has been in my private collection, but is now available on my website. www.JillSaurFineArt.com

The Giant Pacific Octopus

The Giant Pacific Octopus - This is a four foot by four foot acrylic painting on canvas and it represents my love for the sea and all the creatures therein! There would be no painting, if not for the permission to use a photo by dive instructor and photographer, Greg Dombowski, for reference. Thank you, Greg!  By the way, this painting can hang three different directions!  It has a wild ambiance at night with its warm glow.

I grew up by the ocean and have a strong love for the sea. My favorite reef that I've snorkeled was off Yasawa, Island in Fiji, truly paradise!  The ocean and all its creatures are a great gift!

Frog Painting, In Memory Of My Friend

When I was a little girl, my best friend (who lived across the street) was hit by a car and killed instantly. Every day thereafter, when I came home from school, I sat out back by the edge of our pond. While my heart grieved, I listened to nature sing it's song, as if just to me.

There was this frog, this one little frog who appeared every day. Every time I spoke, he answered. I found him so amusing and in a way comforting. God used one of His little creatures to help me find my smile again.

My painting, "Little Blue Frog" will always remain dear to my heart as it reminds me not to miss the unexpected surprises to be found in nature.

Rembrandt Laughing

Do you recognize this man?  It's Rembrandt!  He painted this self portrait, which was only discovered several years ago.  This painting only measures about 6"x8".  It's a little BIG work.

Rembrandt, a seventeenth century artist, brilliantly conveys the outward facial features of his laugh. Today, science has learned so much about what is actually going on in our brain when we laugh.

Rembrandt Laughing by Rembrandt

LAUGHTER TRULY IS THE BEST MEDICINE!  Laughter is the end result of the entire brain processing what's funny. Many functions of the brain only utilize one area, but laughter is sparked from every area of our brain! Follow the yellow brick road through this article and discover why "Laughter truly is the best medicine"!

My tagline is "joy on canvas".   I can't help but paint the joy around me and I think it shows in my work.  We live in a world that is growing darker by the day.  But, the light still shines and that is where I put my focus.  And, I think I'll spend a little more time laughing!

Floral Still Life

"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way, things I had no words for".  - Georgia O'Keeffe

This is "Joyful Encounter".  This vibrant floral still life is an acrylic painting on canvas that measures 36"x36".  This piece has an abundant amount of texture because aside from my brush, I've used my palette knife to apply thick paint.

I have been deeply inspired from the masters of the past who used rich brushstrokes to portray their art.  Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh are two of the masters that come to mind whose work I  admire.

"Never, never, never give up"! - Winston Churchill

"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for". – Georgia O’Keeffe

This commission, “Hawaiian Splendor” is a 36”x48” acrylic on canvas.  I re-painted the ocean at least three times before I was happy with the results.

For me, there are three types of paintings that turn out well.

1.  The first type is the painting that flows effortlessly like a fine tuned symphony producing beautiful music.  I suppose it's like catching that "perfect wave" and riding it all the way to the shore.  I never give up!

2.  The second painting is the one that I wrestle with, painting certain areas again and again.  Actually, the ones I struggle with lead to new discoveries and results that surprise me.  They afford an opportunity for growth.  This struggle reminds me of the grain of sand in the oyster.  The oyster takes the discomfort and spins a beautiful pearl.  I never give up!

3.  The third painting is the one that I have no idea how to do.  I pray, asking God, the ultimate Creator, to show me what to do and to guide my brushes.  The exhilarating part is getting the answer and finding myself doing things with the paint that I've never done before. That’s why I never turn down commissions, they throw me out of my “comfort zone” and that’s where the magic happens!  I never give up!

Sometimes, I think I must be related to Winston Churchill because for better or worse,  I never, never, never give up! -  © 2012 Jill Saur
