"Its wonderful to climb the liquid mountains of the sky.  Behind me and before me is God and I have no fears." - Helen Keller

This painting is all about the sky, then the aspens leading down to the path.  Usually, it's the other way around in my paintings.  The path takes the viewer where I want their eye to lead.  I love this quote from Helen Keller.  Think about it, she couldn't see the sky.  However, she could smell the fresh air while feeling the wind on her skin (not listening to it).

My 30"x30" acrylic aspen tree palette knife painting on wide border canvas is titled, "Finding Grace".  This painting is available for purchase.  You can see more of my work and contact me through my website.  CLICK HERE

Aspen Tree Painting by Jill Saur

Herman Melville, an early American author, is quoted as saying, "We cannot live only for ourselves.  A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects."

My 11"x14" acrylic aspen tree painting on canvas is titled, "Tangled".  It was inspired by my trip last year to Kebler Pass, just outside of Crested Butte, Colorado.  There was an area up in the pass that contained a stand of brilliantly beautiful young aspen trees.  They were so deeply connected that it appeared they were tangled up in one another.

Flowers In A Vase Painting

I love Van Gogh.  People often associate Van Gogh with his tumultuous life and don't realize that he  was a  master artist and an expert in color theory.

A few weeks ago I was inspired to paint this thickly textured palette knife painting using brilliant azure blues, effusive reds, and warm golds.  Though spontaneously painted,  I still apply color theory and the rest of the elements of principle and design.  After concentrating on using those elements for so many years, they just seem to come naturally to me now.  So, when someone asks me how long it takes me to complete a particular painting,  I'm tempted to say, "Oh, about thirty years or so."  However, I just smile and say, "Long enough".

This 16"x20" textured acrylic palette knife flower painting is titled, "Red on Blue".  I was just informed by my representing gallery that it sold over the weekend.  I'm extremely thankful to have folks who appreciate and love my work.  Thank you! - Jill Saur

Georgia Artist, Jill Saur - Artist Statement

Artist Statement
Jill Saur

Artist Statement
My artwork is a natural outpouring of my encounter with God and His majestic creation, resulting in paintings that are dramatic, uplifting, and full of life!  I look for beauty and truth in that which is both obvious and sometimes hidden.  I’m captivated by the splendor of light on the surface of objects, and the contrasting shadows that those objects project. I’m equally beguiled by the myriad of colors that frolic about my world, and invite me to join in on the dance.  My artwork is a waltz that I engage in with brush, paint, and spirit.  It brings me great joy to share the result of that dance with those who collect my work!
My tagline is “joy on canvas”.  It was given to me by Stan Lee, the creator of Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk and numerous other super heroes. When asked to describe my work in just three to five words, Stan’s response was, “Joy on canvas”, because according to him, my work exudes sheer joy”.
 INFLUENCE
"I'm known for my tree paintings, especially aspen and birch trees.  The earliest experience I can remember that affected my love for painting trees, was watching my mother (a student of famed watercolorist, Eliot O' Hara) paint when I was a young girl.  With every whimsical brushstroke, she seemed to have a way of bringing her trees to life!  My love for painting aspen and birch trees began over thirty years ago. I've traveled to Colorado on numerous occasions to photograph these majestic trees.  The beauty of the white aspen and birch trees, and their quaking iridescent leaves, capture my artistic eye and fill my senses with wonder.
I'm deeply inspired by the works of Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne.  Their rich brushstrokes and use of color and light, inspire my work and make me want to be the best artist that I can possibly be!  American Artists,Andrew WyethEdgar Whitney, and Georgia O'keeffe, have also inspired my work.
PROCESS
“The process I use to paint in acrylic and oil is greatly influenced by my early years in watercolor painting.  I gradually build up layers of paint in order to capture an illuminating glow.  I began developing my style of painting aspen and birch trees thirty years ago. By creating rich texture with my palette knife (when painting in oil or acrylic) I'm able to convey the bark and leaves of the trees which practically brings them to life.  Before I start any painting, I do a quick gesture drawing to loosen up and then I sketch out my drawing.  This helps me to be sure I have a good composition and strong area of interest.  I lay out my color palette before I begin to paint. This way, I can be sure it is well orchestrated like a fine tuned symphony”.   Jill Saur's Art

"Canton Street" Roswell, GA.

Little Alley Steak House, Zest Roswell
©1990-2013 "Canton Street" by Jill Saur, all rights reserved
Canton Street, in Historic Roswell, Ga., is a place to step back in time, as well as travel forward into the future.  The History of Canton Street takes us back to the early 1800's during the gold rush, when Roswell King founded the Cotton Mill, and a town was born.  These historic buildings now house beautiful art galleries and thriving restaurants  that draw crowds from all areas of Atlanta.

My 36"x36" acrylic painting on canvas, "Canton Street", was commissioned by a couple who often spent their date nights at Party Chic by Kelly Kakes,  Little Alley Steak, or Zest restaurant.  They had a job transfer to Denver, Colorado and they wanted a reminder of their wonderful time spent together on Canton Street.  This work of art was a labor of love for me because I've lived in Roswell for twenty years.  I had my own art gallery in HIstoric Roswell for four years until I moved my studio home, where I devote myself full-time to painting.

I'm offering a very limited hand-embellished edition of this painting on canvas.  Please contact me for details.  EMAIL  Also, please visit my website to see my other commissioned work and works of art.  WEBSITE

Maine Lighthouse Painting by Jill Saur

jill saur
©1990-2013 Lighthouse Painting by Jill Saur, all rights reserved

Just finished my 24"x12" acrylic palette knife painting of a Maine Lighthouse. I softened the buildings with a touch of fog, brought a light path up two areas of the rocks, creating a path for the eye to travel through the painting, and sprinkled a little pixie dust in the water.

Painting is like a dance. With quick strokes of the brush, the beginning is often like the tango. The middle is like a fine waltz, keeping in step with the music. The end of a painting is like a slow dance, paying close attention to the partners every nuance, move and look. It's always best when I let the painting lead!

Cayman Island Painting

Boat Painting

I just put the finishing touches on this 16"x20" acrylic palette knife painting that I titled, "Cayman Blues".  This little boat was beached on Little Cayman Island and I thought it made for a nice shot and someday a nice painting.

The Cayman Islands contain some of the worlds most beautiful waters to dive and snorkel in.  The beaches are pristine.  I count it a privilege to have been there several times in my life.

Red Tulip Painting

Do you love the many hues of red?  I do and I paint with them often.  The color red stirs excitement, passion, and imagination.  My 36"x36" acrylic painting on canvas, "Rhapsody In Red", was a labor of love.  Reds can be very difficult to work with when blending their many hues.  Those who know me know that I never give up.  This painting was no exception!

It was a privilege to be given a press pass to photograph on the sidelines during the University of Georgia football games.  Through my photography, I was able to get subject matter to paint.  Here is a 50th anniversary painting that I did of UGA VI.  It's titled, "UGA VI, Guardian of the Legacy".  Limited editions are available for this painting.  I still have the original painting that I've been holding on to it for that "special fan".

“In wisdom gathered over time I have found that every experience is a form of exploration.” – Ansel Adams

Leita Thompson Memorial Park is a one hundred acre park near our home just outside of Atlanta. In an open field near the entrance, you’ll find this stately old tree resting on a hill.  No doubt, this tree will soon find it's way onto my canvas.  www.jillsaur.com

This tree painting was inspired by a tree down at the beautiful Chattahoochee River in Roswell, GA.  I love to create texture in my art.  Working intuitively, using a variety of palette knives, I layer the paint and watch the scene come to life.  This 11"x14" acrylic palette knife painting is titled, "Delightful Encounter".

Seabird Key by Jill Saur

Florida Landscape Painting
©1990-2013 SeaBird Key by Jill Saur, all rights reserved
Seabird Key is an enthralling getaway just a short boat ride from Marathon Key.  A number of years ago, I had the privilege of spending a glorious week there with my sister.  On the eastern corner of the small island, there was an abandoned boat.  I was taken with the colors, age, and presence of this old craft.  Last year I came across my photos of this boat and knew I had to paint it.

Here is my finished work, painted in the Post-Impressionist style, reminiscent of Van Gogh.  This 11"x14" acrylic painting on canvas is titled, "Rhapsodic Blues".   Interested in this painting?  Send me an email and I'll send you a prompt reply. Painting Thoughts

Jill Saur
©2013 Jill Saur, all right's reserved
As a photographer, I photograph what I see. As an artist, I paint what I felt when capturing the moments on film. This juxtaposition is a beautiful dance. When I walk amidst the aspens, I’m moved to capture their beauty. But, capturing them is not enough. I must reach for the paint, brushes and canvas that will once again set them free. - Jill Saur  My website:  CLICK HERE

This 11"x14" acrylic palette knife painting is titled, "Eye Of The Beholder".   I rendered this aspen tree painting in exciting hues that dance within the texture.  My reference was an image I captured while on vacation in Crested Butte, Colorado.   We spent the entire week up on Kebler Pass where I was in heaven amongst these beautiful trees!
