Tree Photography by Jill Saur

I took the original photo (the one in the  middle) on Friday.  I played with it in photoshop to add some dramatic color and to get some ideas for a painting (the one on top).  Afterwards,  I adjusted the different color tones into a monochromatic black and white (the one on the bottom).  I often just paint from ideas in my imagination, but there are other times that I first work with photography and photoshop to inspire new colors that I haven't worked with before.

By the way, this tree was in the parking lot of my bank on a busy highway!  I was lucky that there was an undeveloped field off to the side, giving the appearance of being out in the middle of nowhere.

I love onions!  I love the textures and colors that dance from one to another.  There is something metaphorical about the layers that you have to go through to get to the heart of the onion.  It reminds me of the depth of close relationships.  Sometimes you have to go through the many layers to get to the heart of an individual.  As with an onion, sometimes there are tears.

I thought it would be appropriate to finish, sign, and photograph "Aspen Rhapsody In Snow" because of all the snow that we were inundated with this week here in Georgia.  This piece is 32"x70".  It is a triptych, acrylic, brush and palette knife painting on a wide canvas.  I am currently going to hang it in my dining room, but I could be persuaded to sell it if you are interested.  I love painting the aspens in snow and have been doing so for over twenty-seven years!  This painting has been quite the labor of love!

I sold this 11"x14" painting the other day.  I had fun painting it.  It's a palette knife painting with lots of texture, giving it quite a bit of dimension.  This is from a scene in New Mexico where I vacationed several years ago.  I must have taken two thousand photos for reference material.

"Chattahoochee River" Thoughts by Jill Saur

Those who know me, know that I am passionate about painting trees. I wonder if I caught the bug when I was just a little girl watching my mother breath life into her trees as she painted them.  Either way, I began my love affair with painting trees over thirty years ago.  

I have several favorite trees along different sections of the Chattahoochee River.  Recently, I took a long hike along this beautiful river in search of one of my favorite trees.  When I finally arrived at my destination, the clouds overtook the sun, and all of the shadows that I love to photograph had vanished.  So, I returned the next day, walked down the huge hill and hiked back to the same place.  With great joy, I found the sun at just the right place and the shadows were perfect!  This photo is from that day, but not of my favorite tree.  I will share that after my painting is completed.

If you haven't figured it yet, the point of this post is PASSION and DETERMINATION. Passion without determination is like having a great car with no gas in it.  I would have gone down to that river every day if I needed to, just to get the shot that I was looking for.  

When you find what you are passionate about, stay with it, cultivate it, watch it grow, and watch yourself grow with it!

"The Hastening Tree" Tree Art by Jill Saur

This painting, "The Hastening Tree" is 30"x40".  It is in my personal collection, but it is available in a personally hand embellished giclee.  This tree is on the beautiful Chattahoochee River.

What I love about this tree, is that from a distance it appears to be in its prime.  It continues to enamor its viewers with robust alluring shades of green foliage.  At sunrise, the trunk offers striking contrasts of light and dark.  Even the bark is bejeweled with flecks of rich golds, browns, and reds.

The great surprise comes upon close inspection.  The middle base of the tree is completely hollow!  It is absolutely amazing that the tree is entirely supported by the sides and the few roots that make its way to the soil.  This tree is fighting for its last hoorah, its last great moment.  It is reaching to the light and putting forth its branches for all to see.  It’s death will be swift and sudden.  There is no middle ground for this tree.  It is living in splendor and then it will be gone.  I am moved by the lessons it is teaching me and I am compelled to paint it in all of its seasons.  I have actually been photographing this tree for well over two years now.  I have witnessed this tree at sunrise when the first rays of the sun illuminate its weathered trunk and I have sat at its base in the mist of the afternoon when the only hue is a dull grey.   This is when the tree is most haunting and sullen.  My most recent visit was a week ago when the last remnant of fall glistened on its colorful leaves.

I guess you could say that this is one of my special places to go when I need some time to think, pray, evaluate my life, and listen for answers.  Please visit my website to purchase my art.

Chattahoochee River

I took Sky, my dog, down to the river today for a walk in solitude.  It was magnificent!  I love the Chattahoochee and the seclusion it offers. God's beauty is everywhere, but I see it most when I am near the water, and of course, my trees! The fall foliage was spectacular and I got some great shots. I can't wait to get back in the studio to paint!

Rise Early

This painting "Broken Silence" is from a photo that I took at about 6:45 in the morning. For a new and refreshing type of inspiration, get up early and find the morning light illuminating that special thing that inspires you!

Find Something You Love

Many aspiring artists know that they want to paint, they just don't know what to paint. I encourage my students to find something they love and pour themselves into it. Among other things, I love trees. I could paint them for days on end and not tire of their beauty.

This painting is entitled, "Salient Repose". I was taking a walk down at the Chattahoochee River and was captivated by the light on this tree. I knew it

would become a painting, an expression of my impression on that lovely day.

Just as a person can sense who God is by looking at His creation, a person should be able to sense something about an artist by looking at their artwork. - Jill
