Aspen Tree Painting

My 40"x30", acrylic aspen tree painting, "Autumn Gold", is all about the path we choose to follow in life. Aspens are amazing trees. I call them "The Giving Trees", because they are deeply connected to one another under the ground. They are even able to grow a new tree from the offshoot of one of their roots.

Although we are connected to other people in so many different ways, we all must choose the path that we are to personally follow. My path involves expressing myself with brush, paint and canvas, inspiring my patrons through my artwork. It also includes teaching others the "joy of painting". I have some amazing students and look forward to their arrival at my studio every week. Watching them create, grow, and interact with one another, is a beautiful gift that I don't take lightly!

This is my new 60"x36" acrylic on wide canvas painting, "Choice Encounter". It's about the choices that we get to make in this life. The pear in the middle represents a woman who is being flattered by a new love interest, the pear on her right. The pear on the left is watching to see if he will lose the love of his heart. Life, it's all about choices.

As you can see, this is a big painting! It's vibrant, alive, and if there's just a small amount of light in the room, this painting positively glows! At first, I painted the entire painting with a brush. Afterwards, I went in with a palette knife and textured the entire painting with more paint.

Since day one, I've preferred to work on wide-border canvases. I'm fortunate that my clients love that my work is wrapped around the side. It's a clean contemporary look and avoids the need for a frame. When I opened my own gallery, I took the risk of hanging my work this way. It was an instant success!

It's really a winning proposition because if a client does want a frame, they can have a floating frame made to suit the painting. In all the years that I've been selling my work this way, nobody has requested a frame! It's so much easier to hang those large paintings over the fireplace (especially on stone) when the work is light.

The lionfish is eerily beautiful. Although I've snorkeled in a number of reefs throughout the Atlantic and Pacific, this painting was inspired by photos that I took in the Gatlinburg Aquarium, one of my favorite aquariums in the United States.

The Love Of Painting By Jill Saur

I love picking up a blank white canvas. I love contemplating the possibilities of what will emerge when I let myself go.

I love the musing of which brush I will select, or which brush will select me. My brushes are like old friends with whom I am very familiar, yet I still find delight in what they are capable of doing.

I love picking up my palette knife. It is the instrument that will facilitate the mixing and dividing of hue, as well as the application of rich, dramatic texture that will bring my paintings to life.

I love opening the jars of paint, to be reminded of how their hues have deeply affected my life. The vivid blues speak of my first bicycle, and the shimmering waters of the ocean at dawn. Painful or pleasing, color is deeply interwoven into every synapse of my being.

I love the way the first strokes of paint glide across the canvas, and I love the way I can feel the texture of that canvas through the vibrations in my brush.

I love stepping back to become an observer, and waiting until the painting reveals what it needs before I proceed.

I love when light and shadow and form begin to emerge from the canvas, and take on a life of their own.

I love what painting teaches me about life, and I love what life teaches me about painting. I love that I can paint what I feel, and I especially love how I feel when I paint.

I love that the painting experience lightens pain, and gives wings of flight to fettered human limitations.

I love the way painting causes me to look to a source greater than myself for inspiration and guidance. And, when I get to the end of a painting, I love that I know when I’ve made that final stroke that enables me to say, “It is finished”.

Estes Park, Colorado - Bear Lake

Last year, Tom and I went to Estes Park, Colorado. It is one of our treasured National Parks that I hope to return to one day. If you ever get a chance to visit, be sure you spend a day up at Bear Lake! Tom and I went at least two or three times. We came away with some incredible photos for me to use for subject matter to paint. This 11"x14" acrylic painting, "Autumn Inspiration" is inspired by one of my walks up at Bear Lake. The aspens were just beginning to change. The brilliant hues of the quaking leaves, against the azure sky, captured my spirit. I suppose that's why we went back two days later to do some more photo shoots and take in the extraordinary beauty of this magical wonderland.

If you could go back in time and spend one day with anartist, whom would you choose? Today,I’m choosing Michelangelo. His passion,dedication and genius forever influenced the development of Western Art!

His visage is not always recognized. However, his work is immortalized. Michelangelo was born in

1475, and is knownas the supreme Renaissance artist. He was a sculptor, a painter, an architect,and a poet. He lived a long life andleft a legacy that has lasted over five hundred years! He is perhaps best known for his renderings in the Sistine Chapel.

Contrary to popular belief, Michelangelo did not paint the SistineChapel while lying down on his back. Hestood on the scaffolding that he designed himself. However, this put tremendous strain on hisneck and arms. From his discomfort,unparalleled beauty was born!

It took a little over four years for Michelangelo tocomplete his frescoes. He used the Buonfresco technique. It was the first timehe used this difficult, laborious technique. Buon fresco is painting with pigment that is mixed with water. This is applied on a thin layer of wet, freshplaster. His assistants helped with theplaster, but only Michelangelo applied the strokes of paint to the ceiling. He also had to learn some incrediblydifficult techniques in perspective in order to make his figures look correcton a curved surface, from sixty feet below!

The Sistine Chapel

The UGA arch is a well-known landmark at the University of Georgia. The Arch is a cast iron representation of the seal of the state of Georgia. The three pillars stand for Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation, which is the state motto of Georgia. This arch is considered to be the gateway to the University.

My watercolor painting, "Three Pillars Of The Arch", is available in a 14"x10" limited edition giclee on archival, hand-made watercolor paper. It frames out to be a 20"x16" painting. I'm so proud of the company that I use to make reproductions. It is just about impossible to tell the original from the giclee!

I took this photo during sunrise at Crescent Beach, Florida. Although I no longer live in Florida, I grew up by the sea, where my love for nature was born. My artwork, is a natural outpouring of my encounter with Gods majestic creation.

The Hastening Tree by Jill Saur

I'm bringing in the New Year with this painting that remains in my own collection, and hangs in my studio. It's called, "The Hastening Tree" and is 30"x40". It serves as a reminder to me that life passes quickly and I need to live each day to the fullest. This is my favorite place down at the Chattahoochee River. It's my place because of this tree. The base of this tree has been completely hollowed out by disease (you can literally see the river through this tree). A handful of roots keep it alive.

This intrepid tree has weathered floods, severe storms, intense drought, and lightening. Yet, it flourishes, perhaps feebly, but it takes each new day and provides beauty for those who sit under its mighty branches. Some may think it's silly to be so moved by such a thing, but I am. God has used this tree to inspire me, move me, and make me want to finish this life with a fierce tenacity that just doesn't give up!

Poison Dart Frog Painting by Jill Saur

The African poison dart frog is mesmerizing, beautiful, and in it's native habitat, one frog carries enough poison to kill up to thirty or more people! I saw an exhibit of these frogs at The Atlanta Botanical Gardens, where I was able to take photos. Interestingly, these frogs don't produce poison on their own. They become poisonous after eating mites and ants that have dined on poisonous plants. Take away the frogs toxic food source, and you take away the poison. These little creatures are only two inches long!

Winter is upon us. Daylight is a more precious commodity, causing me to treasure the sunlight outside my studio window. I've been busy building a brand new website from scratch. This endeavor, born out of necessity, has consumed my time. However, as with the cold winter, there is light at the end of the tunnel!

This acrylic birch tree painting, "Enchanted Journey" is 40"x30". As with all my work, the image is painted on the wide bordered side. There is no need for a frame. This painting is rather mysterious. It begs one to wonder, "What is down that path"? What lies beyond the known? Whatever unfolds in our life, it's comforting to know that God can meet all of our needs without draining any of His resources!

Today, I sold and delivered this newly finished aspen tree painting. It now hangs in a gorgeous home, over an exquisite fireplace. The owner couldn't be any nicer and it was so rewarding to see her so happy with my work. I'm not one for having my photo taken. I did this to show the scale of a larger painting. Funny thing, I'm working on an even larger painting right now, and I caught myself thinking, "This canvas just isn't big enough"! This acrylic painting is titled, "Rhapsody For You". "Golgotha" by Jill Saur

My daughter went to graduate school in Mobile, Alabama. When I visited her, we went during the week to have a look at a very old (180 years) magnificent cathedral in town. The most amazing discovery for me was a two hundred year old statue of Jesus that was brought over from Italy (sculptor unknown). I was able to take photos. I knew that I would have to render this statue in paint. I took artistic license putting flesh and blood on this statue.

I named this 24"x18" acrylic painting, "Golgotha". "But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed". ISAIAH 53:5 (written 600 years prior to the event).

This painting is only available as a reproduction. The original remains in my collection.

“You alone are the Lord. You made the skies and the heavens and all the stars. You made the earth and the seas and everything in them. You preserve them all, and the angels of heaven worship you." Nehemiah 9:6 (Old Testament)

This is actually a very complicated mixed media work of art that I did about two years ago. After sanding and preparing a wood panel, I used masons preparation to inlay tiles, imprints and other various items. It required many layers of paint and drying time in between varnishes. The outcome was quite rewarding. It hangs in a home in Hawaii.

Giclee Information by Jill Saur

The word “giclee” is a French term meaning to “spray or squirt”. In giclee printing, no other screen or mechanical devices are used. Therefore, there is no visible dot screen pattern. The image has all the tonalities and hues of the original painting! The word, giclee, as a fine art term, has come to be associated with prints using fade-resistant, archival inks. I believe the giclee printing process provides the best accuracy of color reproduction today.

Hand-embellishing is a term used for taking a giclee and hand painting key areas of the artwork with fresh paint. Giclees are a great way to start collecting the work of an artist whom you admire, especially if the original is sold and you love that painting. My giclee’s are luminous, brilliant in color, and one of a kind because no two giclee’s are embellished exactly the same. I hand-embellish each one with the same paint that I used on the original. When my clients receives their painting, they can’t believe it’s not an original! Each series is limited and I keep my edition numbers low. I just varnished this 8"x8" oil painting today. I call it, "Pear Amore". This is a palette knife painting that is loaded with texture. Painting with a palette knife is actually very relaxing and leaves a lot of room for creativity.

I particularly enjoy not having to clean my brushes in chemicals. I just wipe my knife with paper towels.

Smoky Mountain National Park

I just returned from a four day photo shoot to gather ideas for paintings. I don't think I was ready to come home! Anyone living within driving distance should consider this moment for an amazing photo shoot. The leaves are changing and are brilliant. This was the first day at 8:30 in the morning. By the fourth day, the leaves were bright yellow, and the reds were making their stellar appearance!

I went down to the river this morning to work on my photography to prepare for an upcoming trip to the Smoky Mountain National Park. I'll be gathering photos for subject matter to paint.

It's very old, living off of one or two roots, is hollow in the middle, and it's my favorite tree ever! Bear Lake is magnificent in the fall! My husband and I spent nine days there on a photography trip last year. I came away with some wonderful subject matter for my aspen and birch tree paintings!

Pear Painting

This is my latest creation. This acrylic on canvas is 10"x10" and is titled, "Reunion". The two pears in the middle represent the matriarchs of a family. I just can't seem to render pears without giving them a personality, I think it helps me to paint in a more expressive way! This painting has wide borders and the image is painted on the side. There is no need for a frame.

Fall Landscape Painting by Jill Saur

I just put the finishing touches on this 10"x8"x1.5" acrylic landscape painting. I've named it "Autumn Allure", for the beckoning jeweled tones that emanate from the distant trees.

The inspiration is from a photo I took up near Cades Cove in Tennessee. There is a dirt road leading off the main road on the way to Cades Cove. The best kept secret is down that dirt road. It leads to an amazing waterfall and a stream that never seems to end. The rocks are huge and just gorgeous!

Golden Open Acrylics

Golden Open Acrylics

Although I primarily use Golden Heavy Body acrylics for my acrylic paintings, I also enjoy Golden Open Acrylics. The open acrylic drying time is longer than regular acrylics, allowing a generous amount of time to blend. The difference in using this paint rather than the regular acrylics, is that once you apply it, and have finished blending, you need to let it completely dry before going back into it, if you want to change anything. As it begins to 'set up', it gets tacky and further blending at this stage does not work. I am actually working on a painting right now and I'm using this paint. I'll post the results in a day or so. - Jill

"GOLDEN OPEN Acrylics are a slow-drying formulation with a slightly softer consistency than GOLDEN Heavy Body paints. The increased working time of these colors expands their range to include more traditional techniques that was once only possible with oils."

I don't normally do this, but I'm going to get a bit more personal here today. I've been thinking about a post that a friend of mine shared on Facebook yesterday. His name is Chuck. You see, Chuck has Lou Gehrig's disease, otherwise known as A.L.S. He's been battling this for a number of years now, and he is an inspiration to all who know him.

The following quote is from Chucks post yesterday:

"Thank God It's Today". We can never say, thank God it's tomorrow, or thank God it's yesterday. We cannot experience God's grace for tomorrow, today; but we don't need to. We don't know what a day may bring forth. Live in today and seek God's best (Matthew 6:33-34).

This is normally a difficult time of the year for me. It marks the anniversary of my mother passing away. Her death was very painful for me to watch, leaving scars that I thought would never heal. When I read what Chuck wrote yesterday, it changed the way I am choosing to see September. This doesn't mean I will forget my mother or her passing. It means I will not live there in my mind and emotions, when I have today to fully embrace. Today is a gift. It's what I have now. It feels so wonderful to simply say, "Thank God it's today"!

The tree branch (above) doesn't live in yesterdays storms. It doesn't live in tomorrows blue skies or rainy days. It lives in todays fresh breezes that rustle its leaves, providing a melody for those who will listen. I'm listening......

Art Commission

This art commission is hanging in the home of wonderful clients who found me through my website. I invited both the husband and wife to my studio to see my work in person, and to discuss their vision for a commission. They were looking for an original aspen tree painting to be the centerpiece of the beautiful custom home they were building in Atlanta.

After they decided to move forward, they emailed me a color chart reflecting the colors they wanted their special piece to have. After I made my own chart with my acrylic paints, I invited them to my studio to see the colors in person. They also brought me a pottery piece with the colors they wanted in the painting. You can read more about this process on my website and see my preliminary drawing, and the stages of painting while it was in process.

You might be wondering why an artist would take the time to be so thorough with a client. All I can say is that I will go the distance with any client, in order to be completely sure they are one- hundred percent satisfied. I believe the client has the right to be as involved as they choose, especially if they haven't purchased a painting from me in the past.

When I was in art school, I learned an invaluable trick from one of my professors. When I was working on a painting and wanted to really tell how it was coming along, I would turn it upside down, walk away, and study it. My professor would say, "If it looks good upside down, then you know it will look good right side up". If something just looked off when it was upside down, it would usually be the key area that I needed to work on when it was right-side up.

Here is one of the most recognized and beautiful paintings of all time. Just look how exquisite Leonardo Da Vinci's painting, "The Mona Lisa", looks when she is turned upside-down! Van Gogh "Landscape At Twilight"

The artwork of Vincent Van Gogh moves me to contemplation and great emotion. His paintings were on display at the High Museum several years ago. I remember walking around the corner and seeing one of his paintings in person for the first time. As my eyes welled up with tears, I realized that his troubled spirit found solace in expressing his feelings through his painting. This was later confirmed when I read one of the letters that he wrote to his sister.

Andrew Wyeth

Andrew Wyeth is one of the most revered American artists and is certainly one of my favorites! I had hoped to meet him before he passed away, but the opportunity did not present itself.

I have read a number of biographies on this disciplined, talented and mysterious man. When I was in art school, I wrote a paper on him and delivered an oral presentation to a group of students who had no idea

of the genius of this man.

I am most impressed by Andrew Wyeth's early life and artistic discipline as a young boy, when he would draw from real life, and study with his father, N.C. Wyeth, a well-known illustrator. Andrew and his father would roam the fields and bring in the bones and carcasses of deceased wild animals for Andrew to study and draw.

I love that Andrew Wyeth puts so much feeling into his work, and it shows with his brilliant imagery, texture, and subject matter. Andrew Wyeth was given free reign to enter his neighbors homes and paint them even while they were asleep! One of my favorite paintings is the third one below. Andrew captured a long time friend while he was asleep, and it is fraught with feeling!

I will never forget one of Andrew Wyeth's practices. He didn't show his work to anyone before it was completed because he felt he would lose the power with which he painted it. Andrew didn't want to be more concerned about someones reaction than his own intentions.

Though my work is entirely different than Andrew Wyeth, he has forever impacted me as an artist. I never start a new endeavor without feeling a passion for what I am painting. I think about what I want to convey and I put all that I have into it.

In my mind, I am re-visiting a trip my husband and I took to Estes Park, Colorado. We stayed one mile from the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. For nine wonderful days, Tom and I were able to photograph my favorite subject matter, aspen trees! The elk and aspens were abundant, and the weather was enchanting. Tom is a great photographer and he was in his element.

We met some wonderful photographers, and were delighted by how nice they were to share some of their favorite places to capture amazing shots.

This was my first trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. The leaves were changing up at Bear Lake and I think we went there at least three different times. We got some of our best photos there.

Our National Parks are a gift to be treasured!

I just finished this 11"x14" palette knife painting today for a new collector in California. This is a river I came across in Taos, New Mexico. It was a special moment because the lighting was radiant as it streamed through a path in the woods and onto the water. I just knew that I had to paint it. I suppose that one day when I am old and gray, I will still remember this river and how glorious it felt to stumble upon it.

My morning devotion by Sarah Young begins with these words: "IN A WORLD of unrelenting changes, I am the One who never changes. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Find in Me the stability for which you have yearned.

When I was at the beach last week, I spent a lot of time enjoying, observing, and photographing the waves. I thought about how since the beginning of time, there are no two waves that have crashed upon the shore exactly the same. Each wave is unique, yet it is composed of the same substance. So it is in our lives, we all have different compelling circumstances, yet we all feel the same pain, sadness and joy.

When I observe nature, I can't help but marvel at God's creativity and brilliant allure. I suppose I love the ocean so much because I took great solace from the sea as a young girl going through life's difficult changes. I am happy to have had the time to feel that same renewal once again. I look forward to the paintings that will emerge from my soul onto the canvas as a result of this trip.

Crescent Beach, Florida 5/11

Expansive, beautiful, and mesmerizing are words that describe Crescent Beach, Florida. I just returned from seven days of beautiful sunrises, walks on the beach and time with family. Waking early in the morning and getting right to the easel to capture the sunrise on canvas was one of my priorities. What a privilege to have a place right on the ocean with a perfect view and set-up to paint.

I spent the week studying clouds and ocean waves, capturing over six hundred photos for reference material. I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale and have painted the sky and water for years, but I am seeking to take my work to a higher level of excellence. I was so fortunate to have several mornings of astounding sunrises with beautiful clouds and nuances of color that carried on through the mid-day.

Crescent Beach is fifteen minutes south of St. Augustine, which is the oldest city in America. It's a great place to visit and take in the immense history and old buildings, including the oldest fort in the country. The beaches at Crescent Beach are expansive and the sand is equal to a fine powder. The water is clean and you can see dolphins playing in the surf early in the morning. I love this beach!

"Symphonic Splendor" By Jill Saur

This 3 ft. by 3 ft. painting is a commission that I just finished. It is vibrant and uplifting and the blues really make for a great backdrop! My clients are going to hang this in their brand new home over their river rock fireplace in their main living area. A painting like this brings a lot of life and warmth into a room and serves to be a focal point. They gave me a piece of pottery with all these colors in it and a color chart of colors they will use as accents in their home and kitchen. I prepared a palette of colors and met with them to have them approve what I came up with.

The next step for me was to design a composition that they would like based on what they told me they wanted. After I completed several drawings, I emailed them two or three different compositions and they approved one of them with a few changes.

Since the husband had ideas that he wanted and the wife had ideas that she wanted, I listened to what they both liked and combined both into a preliminary 18"x18" painting that they just loved. After all of this is done, I don't even have to think twice as to whether a client will like what I do for them. I was very happy to have them visit my studio this past weekend and have them tell me that they love it!

"Absolute Joy" Mountain Stream by Jill Saur

"Absolute Joy" is a 36"x36" commission that has taken me several months to complete. My clients are going to hang this in the home they are building on top of a mountain. They are such nice people, and it was a complete pleasure painting this for them.

I love water. I am drawn to it and mesmerized by its sound, movement and colors. It has been a long, cold, and very wet winter here in Georgia. I look forward to this spring and summer and taking longs walks along the Chattahoochee River and a visit to the ocean as well.

Complimentary Color Painting by Jill Saur

This is the palette for a complimentary color painting that I painted a while back. Then entire palette is mixed from one red and one green. Red and green are complimentary colors (colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel). White is allowed to lighten, and black is allowed to darken.

Complimentary colors look good together when they are side by side. When mixed together, they produce wonderful hues and tones. This palette produced the painting below which is a scene at the Chattahoochee River.

"Absolute Joy" Mountain Stream by Jill Saur

This is just a snippet of the new commission that I am currently finishing. I don't want to show the entire painting until it is approved by my clients and I have it archived by my reproduction company.

I love painting commissions and working with the wonderful clients that come into my life. This painting was commissioned by clients that have purchased two other paintings from me. They are building a beautiful home on the top of a mountain and this painting will showcase the incredible scenery below.

I have named this painting "Absolute Joy" because that is the feeling that I first had when my sister showed me the photograph that she took of this scene. Gina is a great photographer and she goes to great lengths to get a great shot. Thanks Sis!

This is an unusual painting and has a mystical glow when the lights are dim or strong. In a world where so many paintings are similar, this one really stands out and makes a statement.

I called it "Circle of Quiet" because it is a peaceful painting and symbolizes reflection and solitude. I love these trees and I hope it shows in my rendering of them.
